Periodontitis is a severe form of gum disease caused by a bacterial infection that inflames the soft tissues around your teeth and, untreated, will erode the bone that supports teeth, leading to mobility and tooth loss. Periodontitis affects more than 40% of adults over age 30 and jumps to 70% for adults over 65 in the U.S. It can affect anyone not brushing their teeth and gargling with an excellent antiseptic daily.
